The goals of Mid-City’s Prescott Library are to ensure that students have a safe place to read, to support students in developing their literacy skills, and to promote a love of reading in every student! Students may use the library for reading, researching, studying, browsing, and checking out books. The library is also available as a space for quiet group work and to get homework help. Students may also attend class lessons in the library.

Class Visit

Classrooms visit the library every week for 30 minutes to 1 hour. During class visits, students will listen to storytelling and/or complete an activity and check out library books.

Check-outs

Students may check out up to 2 books at a time during their weekly classroom visits.

Books are checked out for 1 week and must be returned to the library after 1 week. Books may be renewed for an additional 1 week and must be brought into the library to renew.

Students may check out and return books at any time during the day.

Internet access

Supervised Internet access is sometimes available during lunch or after school. Library computers may be used for homework, research, and educational activities and games.

Computer privilege is dependent  on demonstration of proper online behavior and on having a signed Responsible Use Form by a parent or guardian.

Fines

Damaged or lost books will result in fines for students. Students must pay the cost of lost or damaged books, or alternatively, can choose to volunteer their time to the library to remove the fines on their account.

Late Books

Fines are not given for books returned late – however, a student may not check out any new books until the late book is returned to the library.

  • Are you interested in being a parent/guardian volunteer at the library? We would love to have your help and are always looking for storytime readers. Please reach out to our parent representative, Ms. Griselda Luis, at [email protected].

  • Do you have any gently used books you are looking to get rid of? We are happy to take books in good condition (no tears, writing or missing pages) to add to our library collection. In particular, we are looking for hardcover chapter books and “easy readers.”
  • All students are encouraged to get their own library card from the Los Angeles Public Library and get access to their collection of over 6 million books, audiobooks, periodicals, DVDs and CDs!  Complete the Youth/Pre-Teen Pre-Registration Application online, or in person at any LAPL branch.  A Parent/Guardian/Sponsor must also provide their information on the application for their child under the age of 18.

  • The LA Public Library offers live homework help for K-12 students, using virtual classrooms on computers, tablets, or even smart phones.

  • The closest L.A. Public Library branches are the Washington Irving Branch Library at 4117 W Washington Blvd, Los Angeles and the Jefferson Memorial Branch Library at 2211 W Jefferson Blvd, Los Angeles.

  • The Los Angeles County Public Library offers live homework help from a live online tutor. You must have an L.A. County library card and PIN to sign up.

As part of the LAUSD Library Refresh initiative, the Mid-City’s Prescott Library has purchased more than $5,000 worth of new books. These brand-new books have been added to the library collection in the 2023-24 school year!
Hi! My name is Ms. Alex Wilensky and I am the library aide at Mid City's Prescott School of Enriched Sciences. I love the library because it is where students can develop a love for reading and explore their interests.

My favorite books are scary stories, science fiction, and Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan.

If you have any questions or concerns, you can reach me at [email protected].
